It only takes a minority when the majority doesn't bother to vote

Ackerman is a town in Choctaw County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,510 at the 2010 census, down from 1,696 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Choctaw County

While some people were fixed on events in the New Hampshire primary an election here in Mississippi took place for an alderman. Here are the results:

  •  Felecia Miller-Baber has been declared the unofficial winner with 37 votes. Alan Whittington had 16. City Clerk Debbie Boley tells WCBI nine affidavits will be counted Wednesday morning.
About 62 votes out of 1,510, based on the last census. I didn't even bother to check to see how many of the 1,510 are registered voters.  The concept of a democracy is that as majority of people deciding elections based on votes. As it is, because the Ackerman scenario is a rule rather than an exception nationwide, it only takes a minority when the majority doesn't bother.
